The Challenge of Algorithmic Pricing: Preventing Harm while Preserving Efficiencies

Algorithmic pricing is common and, in some markets, competitors have outsourced the design of their pricing algorithms to the same data analytics company. Professor Harrington will explain how outsourcing can result in firms coordinating on inflated prices and the challenges to designing a remedy.
알고리즘 기반 가격 책정이 보편화되는 가운데, 일부 시장에서는 경쟁사들이 가격 알고리즘 설계를 동일한 데이터 분석 회사에 맡기기도 합니다. 본 기조연설에서는 이러한 방식이 어떻게 기업 간의 가격 담합을 유도해 가격을 인위적으로 높일 수 있는지, 그리고 이에 대한 효과적인 대응방안 마련의 어려움 등에 대해 다룰 예정입니다.

Joseph is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on collusion and cartels, and his recent research has focused on how algorithms affect market competition. He has served as President of the Industrial Organization Society and been on the editorial boards of all the top journals in his field. He is a co-author of the leading textbook Economics of Regulation and Antitrust, the author of The Theory of Collusion and Competition Policy, and a co-editor for the recently released Cartels Diagnosed: New Insights on Collusion.

He was a software engineer and product manager before practicing law. He has a JD from UC Berkeley Law and a BA from Georgetown University.
